Obtaining a Social Security Number for H-2B or H-2A Workers

The worker should go to the nearest Social Security Administration field office with the following items in hand:

  • Current, valid, unexpired passport showing the admission stamp for the class of admission that permits work (the passport used to enter with the H-2B or H-2A visa)
  • Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record  (see I-94 page for how to access)

Please note that some Social Security offices require appointments, while others accept walk-ins. To find the Social Security Administration field office closest to you, please visit the link below and choose “Locate An Office by Zip.”

Accessing I-94 Records

Form I-94 serves as evidence of admission or parole into the United States in a nonimmigrant status, as well as a record of the allowed period of stay for that nonimmigrant. All workers coming in H-2B or H-2A status should download a copy of their I-94.

To access a worker's I-94, visit the website below:

https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home

 Select “Get most recent I-94."

Information that you will need to provide:

  • Full name of the person whose I-94 you are accessing
  • The passport number of the person whose I-94 you are accessing
  • The country that issued that passport
